With the weight of the Ford empire behind him and the desire to make waves amongst the established teams, Henry Ford II set out to create a winning racing car. Ferrari was the benchmark, the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race the battleground.

Ford advanced vehicles was created and under the control of Eric Broadley. Immediately, the GT40 project was born. By August 1963 Broadley had designed the low, sleek coupe that would be billed to be number one on both road and track.

The mid-mounted Ford V8 and monocoque chassis became the signature specifications of the rugged, muscular supercar the world would soon come to adore.

In June 1966 the GT40 took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at Le Mans. A year on the GT40 Mark IV took the title from Ferrari. A year later the Mark I claimed yet another victory whilst sporting the famous Gulf Oil livery. The 1969 Le Mans 24 hour race provided the closest finish in the history of the event for Jackie Icky and Jackie Oliver in their GT40’s over rival team Porsche. Winning by a 2 second margin over a 24 hour race.

There are few motorcars in history that have enjoyed such success and inspired such an enormous following. Now thanks to a handful of skilled manufacturers, the legend lives on.
